pangen_7x10Composition

Sterile resorbable haemostatic collagen compress made of type 1, non-denatured, freeze-dried, resorbable native collagen, issued from calfskin.

Mode of action

Pangen has high haemostatic capacity, as the manufacturing process keeps the helicoidal structure of the collagen intact. In its native form, collagen has a specific effect on haemostasis. When collagen comes into contact with platelets, it causes them to cluster and form clots of fibrin.
When applied on a haemorrhage site, Pangen stops blood flow in 2 to 6 minutes, depending on the degree of bleeding.

  • Fast-acting local haemostatic effect
  • Flexible and conformable, facilitating handling of the dressing
  • Resorbable
  • Reduces blood loss
  • Prevention of haemorrhage
  • Prevents excessive blood loss

Pangen is indicated for local haemostasis during surgical operations, when control of bleeding by ligaturing or other conventional means is ineffective or impratical.
Pangen may be used to stop capillary, venous and arteriolar haemorrhage.

Contraindications

  • As collagen reduces the adhesive strength of the methyl polymethacrylate cement, Pangen is contraindicated for haemostasis of bone surfaces on which prosthetic devices are to be fixed using this cement.
  • Do not perform intraoperative autotransfusion using blood which has been in contact with Pangen due to the potential risk of forming micro-thrombi in the main bloodstream.
  • Do not use Pangen® on patients with allergic predisposition or known allergy to bovine collagen.

Side effects

  • Undesirable effects may arise, as with other collagen-based haemostatic agents, including: formation of adhesion, allergic reactions, reactions to foreign bodies, increased incidence of alveolalgia if the compress is used to fill an alveolus when extracting a tooth.

Instructions for use

  • Pangen must be used in sterile operating conditions after adequate preparation of the site to be treated.
  • Pangen is applied directly on the surface to be treated, pressing gently.
  • The duration of application varies depending on the haemorrhage to be treated; in general, 2 to 6 minutes is sufficient.
  • Pangen may be cut to size to improve application.
  • As Pangen is resorbable, the compress may be left in situ after achieving haemostasis if the condition warrants. It is nevertheless recommended that any compress excess be removed once haemostasis is complete.
  • Animal studies have shown than Pangen is resorbed in less than 8 weeks.
  • Pangen remains intact in the presence of blood and does not disintegrate once damp.
  • Pangen has good resistance on the haemorrhage site. It is flexible and easily handled.

Precautions for use

  • It is recommended that any compress excess be removed once haemostasis is complete to facilitate resorption.
  • Pangen must not be left in place after haemostasis of a cutaneous injury as it may slow the normal closure of the wound during healing.
  • Pangen, like other collagen-based local haemostatic agents, may foster bacterial development.
  • The effectiveness of Pangen may be reduced in patients with systemic coagulation disorders.
  • Precautions, such as removing any compress excess, must be taken in ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery to avoid the product being inhaled. Thus, any excess should be removed once the haemostasis is achieved.
  • Due to the absence of clinical data in pregnant women and children, Pangen should only be used if strictly necessary.
  • Pangen is inactivated by autoclaving
  • Pangen is a single-use product, and must not be re-sterilized.
  • If any of the dressing is not used once the pack is opened it must be disposed of and not used at a later date as this will increase the risk of infection.
  • Check the integrity of the double wrapping which guarantees the sterility of the product.
